Challenging Myths, Embracing Conversations

The Middle Ground is an online portal and project which seeks to help young Australians in different parts of the community understand each other better in light of their respective contexts and challenges. The aim is to assist Australians articulate their thoughts productively without fear of ostracisation, and to elevate the public discussion on key social and political issues. Delivered over 5 themes, the project will see the publication of numerous videos, essays, information sheets and other materials to assist this objective.

Why This Project

This project’s imperative comes from the need to elevate the discussion in the Australian community on key social and political issues, particularly as they affect young people of varying social backgrounds. Various groups of Australians have become increasingly dissatisfied with their society and politicians…

Themes

During the research phase, 5 main areas of concern emerged from participants. In essence, these were concerns that young Australians have about society today and their place in it. These areas of concerns have been grouped into the five “themes” that The Middle Ground project will seek to explore through its online portal and productions.

Theme 1: “We decide who comes here”

This theme explores the contentious issue of immigration, including its history, economics, and several key arguments that exist around it. Particularly it looks at various dimensions of thought on immigration which see it as a threat to Australia’s socio-economic fabric and, extending to the issue of refugees, often position those coming into Australia as impinging on the lives of Australians. By looking at key history, facts and figures, this theme will seek to debunk key myths and explore the reality of immigrants and their contribution to Australia.
